Welcome Blanket Project

  • First Church in Salem 316 Essex Street Salem, MA, 01970 United States (map)

The Welcome Blanket project collects handmade blankets for new immigrants to the United State. These blankets are collected and put on display in museum exhibits across the country to engage and educate the public about immigration, before making their way to a new neighbor as a welcome gift. You also have an opportunity to share your own immigration story, and a message of welcome to the people who receive our blanket(s). You can learn more about Welcome Blanket here.

First Church is inviting members of the congregation and the community to come together to make a blanket (or a few!) to send to this organization. You can participate in a few different ways:

  • Knit or crochet an 8x8 inch square OR create an 8.5x8.5 inch square out of fabric (leaving a 1/4 inch border on all sides for the seam allowance), and bring it to the church on or before March 1.

    • You can use any color or pattern you want, but please use materials that are machine washable.

  • Join us on March 1 from 1-4pm to join these squares into blankets. We are especially looking for a volunteer with a sewing machine who could help sew the fabric squares together.

  • During this time, you can also join us to help make a no-sew blanket. This is a great activity for people who aren’t crafters, and is also a great option for children 5 and up.
