Considerable myth and misinformation surround the tragic events of 1692 in Salem. This talk sets the record straight, explaining what actually happened, and exploring the explanations for why it took place. It took a perfect storm of factors ranging religious discord and frontier warfare to political factionalism and the worst weather of the century to create the greatest witch hunt in American history.

Emerson “Tad” Baker is a professor of History at Salem State University and has previously served as vice provost and dean of the graduate school. He is the award-winning author of many works on the history and archaeology of early New England, including A Storm of Witchcraft: The Salem Trials and the American Experience. He was a member of the Gallows Hill Project team, who in 2016 confirmed the execution site of the Salem trials. Baker has served as consultant and on-camera expert for historical documentaries and TV shows for networks ranging from PBS and TLC to Smithsonian and the History Channel.

This hybrid event will be available to attend in person or on Zoom. There is no cost for this event, but donations to make programming like this possible are greatly appreciated.
