Zhan Zhuang: Chinese Standing Meditation (First Saturday Session)

  • First Church in Salem 316 Essex Street Salem, MA, 01970 United States (map)

Join us for a 6-week class on Chinese Standing Meditation (Zhan zhuang) and breathing with movement exercises (Ba duan jin and other chi kung). These exercises are worthwhile at any level of fitness and provide the practioner with greater energy, groundedness, body awareness, and health. It is hard for Westerners to believe that these exercises are so effective, but they have been empirically tested for over a thousand years.

Chinese Standing Meditation or zhan zhuang is one of the techniques used by the older Chinese to maintain their health. Any park in China will include many people performing calisthenics, taiji quan, and “standing like a tree.” Despite the stationary nature of the practice, it is considered a form of exercise. Preparatory exercises are performed that involve movements that are intimately connected to breathing called Ba Duan Jin. Stance-holding and Breathing-with-motion are used in many Chinese Martial Arts so that adepts could achieve higher levels of performance. The practice is useful for providing energy and addressing a variety of emotional, mental, and physical problems. I present the core of my practice based on the teachings of Lam Kam-Chuen whose book, “The Way of Energy” I highly recommend to all who want to participate in the class. (It is one of the most beautiful paperbacks that I’ve seen). The course will be scheduled for 6 weeks with classes on Wednesdays at 6pm and on Saturdays at noon – attend either or both classes.
